Updates from TEKS Resource System

Lisa Owens gave us an update on changes, additions, and revisions in the TEKS Resource System:

The TEKS Resource System have Side-by-Side documents for the upcoming science TEKS. They are located in Resources. These were posted in August. This includes the an analysis of the introductions, which is missing from other versions available on-line (like ours and Lead4Ward's).  Color coding helps you to make sense about significant changes, and where things remained the same. There is also a document titled "Considerations for streamlining"  in the announcement (News section) and will be in the upcoming TEKS Resource System newsletter. This document will be helpful in looking at how these new standards can be implemented next year.

Grade 3, 7, and IPC were revised. Biology: Sequential was updated from draft, and fully aligned to assessment. IPC has also been versioned to allow for a "Chemistry first" or "Physics first."

All K-12 documents have been updated, but we expect no significant changes made during this school year.  Some performance assessments were updated significantly over summer due to trainings last year with Jay McTigh.  600 new items were added to the Assessment Creator.

2017 STAAR Analysis documents will be posted this fall. Due to the change in policy about the calculator some minor changes will be made this fall to the Grade 6-8 IFDs

They are currently working on developing Anatomy and Physiology course curriculum for the next school year.  They are also working toward development on Forensic Science, Aquatic Science, Earth and Space Science, and Astronomy. TEKS clarification documents are available for some of these.

Prehistoric Texas?

Texas Parks and Wildlife reminds us that not only is Texas a big place with a diversity of ecosystems, but it also has a past worth exploring as well... They sent this across my desk a week or so ago...  View as a Webpage Texans prize their history, and rightly so. It’s a special feeling to look down at the ground beneath your feet and know that it was once trod by Native Americans in hot pursuit of bison, settlers fleeing in the Runaway Scrape or legendary ranchers herding their cattle.  Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine  brings you 5 of these prehistoric places that you can visit and catch a glimpse into what came before us. Big Bend National Park Fossil Discovery Exhibit Big Bend National Park The arid canyonlands of Big Bend National Park seem to be the opposite of an ocean, but over the course of millions of years, the land that makes up Texas’ largest national park has been a warm and shallow sea and an inland floodplain.
